Snowpiercer
Main Title Sequence
-
This project reimagines the main title sequence for the film, Snowpiercer. For this film, a notable theme is cycles of power and the cyclical nature of control.
-
We chose to depict the privilege and elitism of the upper class through a sprawling feast table. The sequence begins with an opulent offering of edible delicacy paired with hellish and eerie paintings. By the end, the food is bloody, showing the breakdown of the upper class while the paintings are happier to symbolize the rejoicing of the masses. Thus, this sequence shows a societal transformation through a reversal in power - where there is oppression, there is rebellion, and where there is liberation so too will there be suppression again.

For the sequence, we chose the typeface to convey the idea of longstanding power. EB Garamond is a classical old-style serif typeface with strong serifs and ligatures that evoke a bygone historical era, emphasizing monarchal power. This is fitting for the film which speaks on division through unjust social hierarchy. In the sequence, the type is distressed and bloodied as the system is violently dismantled.
-
The painting shown in the background of the scenes is Hieronymous Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights, which shows a progression from scenes from Eden, to human excess, to the depths of hell. We reversed these panels in our sequence to show the state of the lower class - as the upper class’s feast becomes bloodied, they are lifted from subjugation into their new paradise.

The sequence exists all in one room as a long camera move down the table. Thus, the reference imagery pulls from ornate gallery spaces and elaborate feast tables. Decadence to the point of disgust and excess was one of the major visual strategies for the project.
